InStitchYou: live stitched portraits by Harriet Riddell

Thursday 4 July 2013

Textile performance artist Harriet Riddell is stitching live portraits of visitors at New Designers: Part Two this week.

Showing as part of the graduate exhibition One Year On, Riddell's InStitchYou project applies the same on-the-spot portraiture idea as Tobias Gutmann's Face-O-Mat, which was one of our highlights from Milan Design Week earlier this year.

Riddell is available to book for bespoke performances at events, and also has a stall at Greenwich Market in South London where she draws portraits of market visitors to order in 15 minutes.

Riddell says of her practice, "By drawing characters I meet, conversations I hear and the environment I am in, I document the here-and-now; fixing the transient world into a stitched tapestry. Since graduating I have worked on a variety of projects: designing blinds, creating artwork for offices, stitching in Chinese factories, muggy jungles and Hong Kong harbours."

New Designers: Part Two runs until 6 July at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London.
